Why the Tube map lies to you about distance

Every Londoner trusts the Tube map without ever quite believing it. It tells you where to change trains and in what order the stations come, and it does that job better than any transit diagram before it. What it does not do, and was never built to do, is tell you the truth about distance.

Harry Beck's 1933 diagram is a schematic, not a map, and its distortions are large enough to change how you should actually travel. Here are the checkable ones, using the same station and line data that powers our London guessing game and the network explorer.

A diagram, not a map, on purpose

Beck was an electrical draughtsman by trade, and he drew the Underground the way he would have drawn a circuit: straight lines at 45 and 90 degrees, evenly spaced stations, and no attempt at real-world scale. London Transport Museum credits him with a simple insight, that passengers underground care about sequence and interchanges, not geography, since there is nothing to look at out of the window to check the map against anyway.

That insight is why the diagram, first published in 1933, still ships essentially unchanged nearly a century later. It is also why it is such a bad tool for judging how far apart two stations really are.

Covent Garden to Leicester Square: 260 metres that look like a mile

The diagram's most famous victim sits on the Piccadilly line. Covent Garden and Leicester Square are drawn as a normal one-stop hop, spaced like any other pair of adjacent stations. In the tunnel, the journey is about 260 metres, the shortest gap between any two adjacent stations on the entire network.

Once you add walking to and from the platforms, waiting for a train and the interchange at each end, the street-level walk is faster for almost anyone able to make it, and it is famously one of the most overpriced short rides a tourist can buy. Leicester Square station staff have spent decades pointing this out to queueing visitors, without much effect.

The magnifying-glass trick: squeezing the suburbs, stretching the centre

Beck's other move was to apply what design historians describe as a graphic magnifying glass: the crowded central zone is enlarged so its stations have room to breathe, while the outer suburbs are compressed to fit the same page. The effect, discussed at length by The Conversation, is a map that reads perfectly at a glance and is systematically wrong about scale in both directions at once, stretching zone 1 and squashing everything past zone 3.

South Ealing and the neighbour it's hiding

The same compression works both ways. On the District line out west, South Ealing is drawn with the same tidy, even spacing as every other station on the diagram, giving no hint that it actually sits very close to its neighbour, Acton Town, in the real world. Geography-focused critiques of the map list this among a handful of spots where the insistence on uniform, legible spacing quietly erases how close two stations actually are.

The two stations with all five vowels

South Ealing turns out to be a minor celebrity for a second, unrelated reason. It is one of only two stations on the network whose name contains every vowel, A, E, I, O and U, at least once, the other being Mansion House on the Circle and District lines. South Ealing is the rarer of the two: it is the only one that manages the trick using each vowel exactly once, no repeats, which has nothing to do with the map's geography but everything to do with why a station name sticks in people's heads long after the platform spacing is forgotten.
