Colour runs on rank, not on the raw figure, so the ramp is spent evenly across the network. The figure shown is the mean net household income of the census section (seccion censal) the station sits in, from the INE Atlas de Distribucion de Renta de los Hogares for 2023. A census section holds roughly 1,000 to 2,500 residents, which is the finest geography Spain publishes income at, and it describes the neighbourhood rather than the riders. The map draws a clear axis. The top is the Salamanca district (Nunez de Balboa, Serrano, Velazquez), Chamartin (Cruz del Rayo, Duque de Pastrana, Pio XII, Republica Argentina), Retiro (O'Donnell, Sainz de Baranda, Retiro) and Centro (Colon, Banco de Espana), together with the northern arc of Fuencarral-El Pardo served by lines 7, 9 and 10 (Mirasierra, Pitis, Arroyofresno, Montecarmelo, Las Tablas, Paco de Lucia). Lines 9 and 10 take most of the podium. Hospital Infanta Sofia, out in San Sebastian de los Reyes, is the only suburban stop to reach the very top. The gap between the richest station and the poorest on the network (Alto del Arenal, 25,505 EUR) is a factor of 4.1. Two honest caveats: twelve stations tie at 104,774 EUR, which is the ceiling the INE publishes (the value is censored, so the real top of the list is higher than it looks), and a few sections are barely residential, Feria de Madrid being the IFEMA exhibition grounds.
