BART and Muni game: a San Francisco daily, out September 15

San Francisco is getting its own daily transit guessing game. DailyMetro's SF edition launches on September 15, 2026, and it's already playable in early access at dailymetro.live/sf. One mystery station per day, and you find it by guessing: every try tells you which lines you share with the answer, which direction it's in, and how close you're getting.

What counts as "the SF metro" anyway

This was the fun part of building the city. San Francisco doesn't have one system, it has a layer cake, so the dataset covers the whole cake: 108 stations and stops, hand-curated from SFMTA, BART and Caltrain route maps because the usual open-data sources are surprisingly patchy for SF.

Concretely, the pool includes:

• Muni Metro: the J, K, L, M, N and T lines, the backbone of the game.
• The historic streetcars: the F down Market and the E along the Embarcadero.
• The cable cars: Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason and California. Yes, guessing a cable car stop is legal, and yes, it feels like cheating.
• BART: the nine stations of the city core, from Embarcadero down the Mission to Daly City.
• Caltrain: the San Francisco stops, starting at 4th & King.

The oldest stop in the dataset is California & Grant, on the California cable car line since 1878, which must make it one of the oldest playable answers in any DailyMetro city. The busiest is Embarcadero, where BART and Muni stack on top of each other under Market Street.

How the daily game plays

Type any station as a guess. The game compares it to the mystery station column by column: shared lines, a compass arrow pointing toward the answer, the length of its name, and the neighborhood. No guess limit; you narrow it down until the row goes green, and faster wins score more. A harder Connaisseur mode swaps the gentler clues for opening year and ridership.

The line clue is where SF gets interesting. Sharing a line with your guess means something different when the "line" is the N Judah versus the Powell-Mason cable car, and a station like West Portal, where the K, L and M dive into the tunnel together, is a monster opening guess. There's also a Map mode, where the mystery station is marked on an empty map and each miss reveals another layer of the network.

September 15, and early access now

Launch day is Tuesday, September 15, 2026, which becomes Day 1 for San Francisco. Until then the edition is in early access at /sf: fully playable, same daily station as everyone else, just not yet listed in the city picker. Every line and station also has a reference page in the SF explorer with opening years and ridership if you want to warm up first.

DailyMetro is free, browser-based, no account. SF joins DailyMetro's roster of 21 city editions, seven of them live today (including New York, London and Washington) and the rest launching through mid-October, with the daily station resetting at midnight Pacific.
