How is the best route worked out?

Fewest changes first, then fewest stops. Every route tied for best is shown at the end, on the map.

Is there a limit on tries?

No. You can undo a ride and try another as often as you like until you submit.

How often does the route change?

A new route every Monday, for the whole week. It does not count towards the three daily modes.
